Horror Poster Conclusion

After having analysed multiple horror film posters, I identified the generic conventions used so that I can include these in the poster for my partner and I's horror film. In all of the horror film posters I can see that the image is either a person or object and is the main focus of the picture. The characters used are generally significant within the film and are usually of high importance, therefore giving the audience an insight of what the film entails.

I had noticed from the different posters that the use of shot type can vary. The most commonly used shot types that I had looked at were: a medium shot, a close up, and an extreme close up. A medium shot makes the antagonist seem close to the audience. The antagonist is usually making direct eye contact, therefore using this shot type can make the audience feel uncomfortable. An extreme close is up is normally used to show the details of a character, which may have a link to the narrative of the film. A close up shot can sometimes be used to imply to the audience that they will become closer to the character and is likely to sympathise for them.

The main colours used within horror movie posters are dull and dark ones. These are common colours to be used because dark colours e.g. black are usually associated with terror, mystery and death. Although, the use of the colour red is often seen as it's intense and a bright colour which stands out from the dark ones. Also, the colour red has connotations of blood which could link with violence, suggesting to the audience that the film contains a form of intense and violent moments.

From analysing the posters I can see that there is minimal text on them. It always includes the film title which is situated at the bottom of the poster. I think it is structured like this so that the audience looks at the image before reading the title of the movie. Therefore, they are more likely to associate the image with the movie and remember it. Along with this, the credits usually appear at the bottom of the poster in a small font. The title of the film is always shown on the poster, however it's often in a larger, bolder and different font to the rest of the writing in order to make it stand out.

On some of the movies there is a tagline. Tag-lines are included because they are usually words which links to the narrative of the film. This is memorable, and also gives the audience an insight on the action that happens which will be appealing and interesting to people who like this horror genre.

Potential Sketch Layouts

After doing research into different kinds of film posters, I sketched out 3 different potential layouts I may want to use for the poster of my film. I noticed a trend within horror film posters - they all seem to have very minimal writing on them and most likely has one main image. Therefore due to this I think that the top, and bottom posters would be the most successful.
