Potential Sketch Layouts

After doing research into different kinds of film posters, I sketched out 3 different potential layouts I may want to use for the poster of my film. I noticed a trend within horror film posters - they all seem to have very minimal writing on them and most likely has one main image. Therefore due to this I think that the top, and bottom posters would be the most successful. 

Horror Poster Conclusion

After having analysed multiple horror film posters, I identified the generic conventions used so that I can include these in the poster for my partner and I's horror film. In all of the horror film posters I can see that the image is either a person or object and is the main focus of the picture. The characters used are generally significant within the film and are usually of high importance, therefore giving the audience an insight of what the film entails. I had noticed from the different posters that the use of shot type can vary. The most commonly used shot types that I had looked at were: a medium shot, a close up, and an extreme close up. A medium shot makes the antagonist seem close to the audience. The antagonist is usually making direct eye contact, therefore using this shot type can make the audience feel uncomfortable. Lights Out Poster Analysis

--> The main image of the poster, is of an object most likely to be important and relevant to the storyline. --> The object can be seen through the use of a medium shot, perhaps to reveal the detail of it towards the audience. --> Mainly dull and dark colours have been used to represent genre. --> There is minimal text within the poster, to allow the main focus to be on the image. --> The film title (biggest writing, most bold, sinister font, located at the bottom). --> Release date. --> Credits located at the bottom. --> Mention of a previous horror film to help advertisement. --> Social media link.

The Nun Poster Analysis

--> The main image is of the antagonist, giving the audience an insight into what the film entails. The character is looking directly at the camera, making the audience feel uncomfortable. --> The antagonist can be seen through the use of a close up, to enable the audience to see the detail within the character's face, as this may link with something to do within the narrative of the film. --> Dull/dark colours used. --> A use of red, to represent blood or fear. --> Black background to help the image, and writing on the poster stand out. --> Title of the film (serif, biggest writing, indication of genre) located at the bottom. --> Release date. --> Tagline - indication of genre, and gives away some of the storyline.

Insidious 2 Poster Analysis

--> The main image of the poster is of 3 of the main protagonists. --> The protagonists are seen through the use of a medium shot, to make the audience feel closer with the characters. --> Dull/dark use of colours. --> Low level lighting. --> Some use of red to perhaps represent blood or violence within the film. --> Dark background to allow focus on the image and the writing on the poster. --> Name of the film (san serif, biggest wiring, most bold, indication of genre) located on the side of the poster. --> Credits in small writing located at the very top. --> Release date. --> Website name. --> Tagline - gives away some of the storyline.

Jigsaw Poster Analysis

- -> The main image and focus of the poster is of the antagonist, this could perhaps  make the audience feel uncomfortable and intimidated. --> Close up shot has been used to present the antagonist, this could intimidate the audience. --> Dull/dark colours mainly used. --> Low level lighting. --> Black background to allow the writing and image on the poster to stand out more. --> Title of the film (san serif, biggest writing, most bold) presented at the bottom to allow more focus on the image. --> Credits located at the bottom. --> Tagline, gives away a bit of the storyline. --> Website name.

Unfriended Poster Analysis

--> The main image here is of one of the character's most likely to be the protagonist. --> The protagonist is shown here using a close up shot. The use of this shot makes the character seem close towards the audience. Implying that during the film the audience will become closer to the character and is likely to sympathise for them. --> Dull/dark colours (black, white, grey) --> Use of red, could represent blood within the film and a sense of violence. --> Black background, makes the writing and picture on the poster stand out. --> Movie title (san serif, biggest writing, most bold), indication of genre - located at the bottom to allow focus on the image. --> Credits located at the bottom. --> Tagline - gives away a bit of the storyline. --> Cinema release month. --> Social media links.

Horror Poster Analysis Introduction

Now that I have decided I am going to be working with the horror genre, I will be analysing horror film posters and identifying the generic conventions used so that I can include these in the poster for our horror film. The posters that I will be looking at belong to the following films: "UNFRIENDED", "JIGSAW", " INSIDIOUS 2", "THE NUN", "LIGHTS OUT".
